The Chinese lunar calendar was adopted by Japan in 861.


 
 



 



A complete cycle is sixty years and is made up of five inner cycles of
twelve years each. Specific animals give their names to each of the twelve
inner year cycles, in the following order:

Hours of the day were also divided using the same animal names,
each period being of two hours beginning at 11pm: The hour of the rat.

1 Rat 11pm-1am   7 Horse 11am-1pm
2 Ox 1am-3am   8 Sheep 1pm-3pm
3 Tiger 3am-5am   9 Monkey 3pm-5pm
4 Hare (rabbit) 5am-7am   10 Rooster (cock) 5pm-7pm
5 Dragon 7am-9am   11 Dog 7pm-9pm
6 Snake (serpent) 9am-11am   12 Boar (pig) 9pm-11pm
